Short Bio

Alexander Raake is a full professor at RWTH Aachen, heading the Chair and Institute for Communications Engineering (IENT). Till May 2025, he has been a Professor at Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau), leading the Audiovisual Technology Group and serving as Director of the Institute for Media Technology and of the Ilmenau Interactive Immersive Technologies Center (I3TC). He received his PhD from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany in 2005 with a dissertation on Speech Quality of VoIP. He obtained his Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering from RWTH Aachen in 1997 after studies in Aachen and at Télécom ParisTech (ENST), France, subsequently conducting research at EPFL Lausanne then Ruhr-University Bochum. After a Post-Doc at LIMSI-CNRS, Orsay, France from 2004 to 2005 he joined the Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), an An-Institute of TU Berlin. From 2005 to 2015, he held different positions at T-Labs, including an assistant professorship (from 2009) and associate professorship (from 2013). His research focuses on audiovisual technology and communication systems and user perception, including immersive video and audio, AR/VR/MR, and Social XR. He has contributed to a number of international standards of ITU-T and the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG), serving as Co-Rapporteur for the workgroup Q14/12 (models and tools for multimedia quality assessment of packet-based video services) and as Co-chair of the Intersector Rapporteur Group Audiovisual Quality Assessment (IRG-AVQA). He has received several awards, such as the Johann-Philipp-Reis Award in 2011.
