New Master's Courses — Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (IENT)

Starting this semester, IENT will offer two new master's courses: Video Systems Technology and Master's Project — Communication and Multimedia

Video Systems Technology

This course will be taught by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Raake and offers a comprehensive look at the entire video streaming pipeline — from content production to user-side quality assessment. Students will gain a solid understanding of the technologies and principles that shape how video is captured, processed, compressed, delivered, and ultimately perceived by viewers.

Topics covered:

Fundamentals of image and video processing
Video interfaces and formats
Video coding
Media delivery
Visual perception and perceived video quality

Hands-on learning: The course also includes coding assignments related to different parts of a typical video streaming pipeline. Upon successful completion of the tasks, a bonus will be added to the final grade.

Master's Project - Communication and Multimedia

In the project "Communication and Multimedia," Students will work on practical problems related to current research topics at the institute in groups of 2-4. Students will have the opportunity to work with new technologies such as Virtual Reality and improve their practical skills in a collaborative environment under the supervision of an IENT Team member. This year's offered topics are:

  1. Reconstructing Aachen’s Sculptures for Virtual Reality
  2. Automated Avatar Generation for Virtual Reality
  3. Someone Has Been Here Before - Visualising and Exploring Recorded User Interactions in Virtual Spaces

More information on the individual project topics and scope can be found on the project website: https://www.ient.rwth-aachen.de/cms/project-communication-multimedia/. Students are also invited to contribute their own topic ideas.
